Week 0: Let's all just take a breath
Well Husker fans, the season has begun and to many, it feels like it has already concluded. Following a long off-season full of transfers and questions, we finally got some answers.
The Huskers traveled to Ireland this past week to kick off the College Football season against the Northwestern Wildcats. Going into this game, the Huskers were an 11.5 point favorite that many bettors seemed to stay away from, and for good reason.
While the Huskers were coming off of what was deemed a “season of heartbreak” by many, the off-season brought a lot of hope to the new season. Under Scott Frost, the Huskers brought in 22 new faces to revamp the roster while also bringing in nearly an entire new Offensive staff headlined by former Pitt Offensive Coordinator, Mark Whipple with new quarterback transfer Casey Thompson at the center of the offense.
Yet, after all of the adjustments, one simple special teams blunder cost them their momentum. I refuse to say it cost them the game, however, things were certainly incongruent following that call. Being up 11 with nearly 10 minutes left in the third quarter, the onside kick was thought to be the potential dagger. Obviously, it wasn’t, meanwhile, the Huskers stumbled the rest of the game face planting to Northwestern in Ireland 31-28.
Now, while it is very easy to point fingers, call for Scott Frost’s head, and blame one thing, that is never the case. Football games are won from every aspect of the game. Offense, Defense, Special Teams and of course, Coaching. This is not new to us Husker fans. From heartbreaking losses coming from costly fumbles, interceptions, missed punt coverages, and now a poorly timed onside kick, we Husker fans have crashed back into reality of this not being another Osborne championship team.
While this first game is extremely disappointing, all we can do now is hope and pray the defense can find its front 7 and find quarters one and two of Casey Thompson and we can still make a bowl game, and potentially a good one. Though these next two games are scrimmage like, I am eager to get reignited with excitement come September 17 against Oklahoma.
There are still many questions left to answer but, let’s all just breathe and remember, we have 11 games to go.
Go Big Red.
